The Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) commissioned the compilation of an Environmental Management and Monitoring Framework (EMMF) for Marine Aquaculture in 2007/8. Subsequently, AquaEco have been appointed to review the EMMF document towards finalization.
PURPOSE OF THE EMMF: With the increasing growth in South African aquaculture, there is a need to manage, minimise and mitigate potential impacts related to ecological imbalances, habitat alteration, exotic species, changes in biodiversity, water quality and disease - all of which may pose a potential threat to human health and ecological sustainability. This EMMF sets out an understanding of these potential threats in terms of marine aquaculture and lays down a foundation for the management and mitigation thereof.
The EMMF seeks to:
Provide a decision support tool for the planning of marine aquaculture initiatives.
Assist in the EIA process by providing specific environmental guidelines for marine aquaculture projects.
Provide a basis for achieving environmental sustainability and a platform for the statutory reporting of environmental performance.
PURPOSE OF WORKSHOP: A number of methods have been employed in the review process, including consideration of the manner in which the original terms and scope was met, technical analysis, linguistic evaluation, the updating of stakeholders and formatting where required. Within this review process an opportunity has also been allowed for consultation with all marine aquaculture stakeholders so that additional inputs may be captured in the document before it is applied as an industry framework. This consultation will be done by means of the workshop.
