1) The SANCOR Forum
This year’s forum is themed: “The role of SANCOR in a changing society – past, present and future”. The forum consists of a themed session in the morning and a business meeting in the afternoon. Themed presentations will focus on the role of SANCOR in developing and stimulating scientific research in the marine and coastal environment.
Invited speakers are:
Prof George Branch – University of Cape Town
Ms Renee Le Roux – South African National Biodiversity Institute
Prof William Froneman – Rhodes University
SANCOR has outsourced a study investigating the current status of marine science in South Africa and Dr Brian Colloty of Scherman Colloty and Associates will present the preliminary findings at the forum.
Dr Kim Prochazka (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) will chair the panel discussion which will follow after the talks.
The award winning guide: "Two Oceans- A guide to the marine life of southern Africa" will be made available at the forum a discounted proce of R210 (normal price R290). Cash or cheque payments will be accepted, no debit/credit card facilities will be available.
2) Gilchrist Memorial Lecture
Prof Alan Whitfield (South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity) current co-recipient of the prestigious Gilchrist Memorial Medal will present a lecture entitled:
”Fish Research in South African estuaries – A century down the line”. It will be preceded by a presentation from the winner of the SANCOR Student International Travel award for 2010, Ms Genevieve Jones (University of Cape Town).
