BACKGROUND
The South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research (SANCOR) has developed the SEAChange Research Programme which reflects a) the important place of humans in the dynamic marine and coastal ecosystem, b) the need to shift to an ecosystem-based approach to management and c) the fact that both natural environments and societal processes are changing at an unprecedented rate.

PURPOSE OF WORKSHOP
The aim of this workshop is to provide a platform for researchers to brainstorm and agree on possible topics (including the subject description and rationale, and expected outcomes/impacts) for the Ecosystems and Society Theme of the SEAChange Research Programme. These topics could represent, for example, current gaps in our knowledge and/or areas of priority for cutting-edge knowledge production and management/policy development etc.

The NRF will include some of these topics into the forthcoming open call for SEAChange proposals to be made in June 2009 for 2010 funding. The Ecosystems and Society Theme will therefore adopt a directed call approach for this 2010 funding call as opposed to a demand-driven approach within a broad framework as embraced in the past and which will still be relevant for the remaining SEAChange Themes for this call.
