Prof Andrew Manning, University of East Anglia UK, is currently a principal investigator in a number of global carbon assessments in the EU. These projects include CarboEurope and CarboOcean. He has also been involved in the leading atmospheric O2 intercomparison programme (GOLLUM), which brings links 12 international O2 laboratories.
Prof Manning will present a seminar on O2/N2 and its role in the carbon cycle and climate change, using data from the Global Atmospheric Watch station at Cape Point.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is, by far, the most important greenhouse gas causing anthropogenic climate change. Despite this importance, relatively few funds are provided to collect measurements of CO2, and there are large gaps in our scientific knowledge of the carbon cycle, especially quantifying country-scale carbon emissions, and regarding carbon feedbacks with climate. This talk, whilst embracing the interconnectedness of all things, will demonstrate what we have learnt from existing measurements of greenhouse gases, discuss briefly how such measurements are made, and emphasise the key areas which require our attention. Finally, from a University of East Anglia perspective, I will touch upon the changing environment climate scientists find themselves in, with respect to their engagement with policy-makers, the media, climate denialists, and the general public.
