Report on the Western Cape SANCOR Student Workshop
A total of 56 students involved in marine and coastal science research attended a very successful student workshop at the University of the Western Cape on 26 July 2001. Students, all based in the Western Cape, were affiliated to six different universities: University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, University of Fort Hare and University of Pretoria.
The workshop was opened by Dr Renfrew Christie, Dean of Research at the University of the Western Cape, who welcomed all the workshop participants to the university. From his analogy to Marie Curie’s work, he urged students to take the initiative and mould their own careers as
scientists, and he stressed that success comes from perseverance and hard work.
