The Norwegian research ship, Dr Fridtjof Nansen, will embark on a three to four month voyage in the western Indian Ocean in August, continuing the pioneering research that began in 2008 under the umbrella of the Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) Project.

Many international programmes have either developed or changed emphasis to focus on climate change and variability, social needs, and ecosystems. This article summarizes some of the major international projects and programmes in science in the marine and coastal environment and attempts to expand the readers’ TSLAG (i.e. Three to Six Letter Acronym Glossary).

Student Contribution: Research in the marine environment has historically been the domain of marine scientists. However, more recently, there is a growing body of research that focuses on social issues in the marine environment. This project examines the issue of ‘subsistence fishers’ in Durban whose fishing sites are being eroded through various development processes. A response to this article by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has been included.
