The first Antarctic Science winter school was held in Hermanus in July 2008 bringing together 16 students from across the country to learn more about principal areas of research in Antarctic Science including the Antarctic continent, sub-Antarctic islands and the Southern Ocean.
This year the winter school will run from 13-17th July and we are now inviting applications from honours students who may be interested in pursuing postgraduate studies in Antarctic Science.
The school will emphasise the potential for multidisciplinary research and the following fields will be
covered:
* Biology,
* Geomorphology,
* Oceanography and
* Space Physics.

In addition, a general background to science in the Antarctic will be presented along with an overview of the Antarctic Treaty and its associated protocols, as well as a series of workshops that will develop core skills such as scientific writing, presentation skills, data analysis and GIS.

Eligible students can apply at http://moodle.hmo.ac.za
Applications will close on the 15th May 2009. Successful applicants will be notified by the 18th of May 2009 and will have the cost of transport to Hermanus and all accommodation and meals covered.
