The environmental and resource economics field continues to grow fueled by a greater appreciation of the need to understand the economic roots of environmental challenges and to formulate economically sound solutions. Despite a relatively high level of interest and activity in the field, opportunities for learning and cross-pollination are relatively limited. As part of the C.A.P.E. programme, SANBI and its partners are thus pleased to announce a two day conference on economics in natural resource management that will take place in Sea Point, Cape Town on the 21st and 22nd May 2009. The conference will have a relatively broad focus on environmental resource economics as it applies to natural resource management including marine resource management. Click on the links for the conference announcement and registration form. The closing date for registration is 20 March 2009.

For further enquiries contact the conference secretary - Wendy Paisley (Email: paisley@botanicalsociety.org.za, Tel: +27-21-799 8824)
Key speakers include Dr Carlos Manuel Rodrigues (ex-environment minister of Costa Rica and architect of their world-renowned Payments for Ecosystem Services scheme) and a number of others.

We have also raised generous funding for students that can now apply for financial assistance to cover their conference related expenses. The website explains the simple application process that students need to complete to apply for financial assistance (note that applications close on the 9th February 2009).

Finally, the deadline for the submission of abstracts has been extended slightly to the 23rd of January 2009 so please don't delay if you want to submit a poster or paper.
