The exhibition "Atmosphere .Climate revealed by the Ice", a joint project between the Embassy of France and MTN Science Centre, will be held in Cape Town from December until mid-January. It is aimed at the lay person with an interest in topical environmental issues.
The inauguration will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Mathieu Rouault, University of Cape Town.
Climate is changing as a result of human activities which modify the atmosphere's composition and its land surface. If climate changes occur gradually then societies will have time to adjust to the consequences, e.g. the increase in occurrence of droughts in Southern Africa or the submergence of Bangladesh under rising sea levels. If these changes occur abruptly there may be no time to plan. Studies of the climate of the past show that abrupt changes brought about the collapse of civilizations such as the Mayan in Central America or the Akkadian in Mesopotamia. This lecture will explore mechanisms of climate changes and their role in the demise of past civilizations.

The exhibition "Atmosphere .Climate revealed by the Ice" will be displayed at the Alliance Française from 8 to 12 December and at MTN Science Centre from 14 December until mid-January.
The inauguration and lecture will be followed by a cheese and wine buffet.
