SA SCIENTIST LEAVES
FOR LOWESTOFT
Members of the South African fishing industry, the marine science community and staff of Marine and Coastal Management (M&CM) paid tribute to Dr Andrew Payne, the former director of the Offshore Resources Management Sub-directorate of Marine and Coastal Management at a farewell function in Sea Point in April 2000.
Dr Payne and his wife, Dr Beatriz Roel, left South Africa at the end of April 2000 to take up scientific positions at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences in Lowestoft, UK.
Dr Payne worked for Sea Fisheries (renamed M&CM in April 1999) for 30 years, during which time rose to the level of Director of the Sea Fisheries Research Institute, the scientific component of Sea Fisheries which earned a reputation for scientific excellence. He was Director from November 1995 to April 2000.
 
Dr Payne has participated in many international and national collaborative initiatives including ICES, ICSEAF, BENEFIT, BCLME and SANCOR. He served as the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism’s representative on the SANCOR Steering Committee since 1994 and was elected as Vice Chair in 1999.
 
Dr Payne will remain the chair of the international panel of referees for the South African Journal of Marine Science, a publication that he founded in 1983 and edited for many years.
