rahamstown played host to over 80 scientists, environmental educationists and partners from the commercial sector at the Coelacanth Workshop that was held from 10 – 12 September. The workshop was a joint JLB Smith Institute / Rhodes University initiative and took the form of a series of presentations, public lectures and workshops. Participants brought together the disciplines of marine geoscience, oceanography, marine biology; coelacanth biology, population genetics and zoogeography; genome resources; education and communication and management and policy. The task; to set goals and define their roles in terms of capacity building and transformation which will eventually form part of the overall project implementation plan. Interaction within these diverse groups indicated the all-encompassing approach that needs to be taken in developing a plan of this magnitude.
