The target group of the school are postdocs, graduate students, and advanced master students, from all over Europe and beyond, who wish to broaden their understanding of the ocean. They should preferably be engaged in a field neighbouring physical oceanography, such as atmospheric physics/meteorology, hydrology, geophysics, biogeochemistry, and bio- geo-sciences, and should have a sufficient knowledge of basic physics.

Open Science Meeting for an International Quiet Ocean Experiment (UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France, from 2011-08-30 08:00 to 2011-09-01 17:00)
The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) announce an open science meeting for an International Quiet Ocean Experiment (IQOE). The purpose of the open science meeting is to develop a Science Plan for the IQOE, a focused international research effort that may last a decade or so. This plan will include background information to document the importance of the issue of sound in the ocean and its effects on marine organisms; identify information gaps; and describe research, observations, and modeling activities needed to fill these gaps. The plan will draw on background information and research priorities from previous documents, as well as from discussion papers submitted for the meeting, and the results of the discussion sessions, which will be a major component of the meeting. The plan will include specific details for implementing IQOE activities.

1 December 2010 is the deadline for submitting proposals to SER2011, the 4th World Conference on Ecological Restoration, scheduled for 21-25 August 2011 in Mérida, Mexico. The theme is Re-establishing the Link between Nature and Culture. SER conferences address topics such as: the role of restoration in mitigating and adapting to climate change; reinstating landscape connectivity and reducing fragmentation; threatened and endangered species, populations and habitats; restoring natural capital; policy-making at the local, regional and national level; and traditional ecological knowledge and community-based restoration.

The favourable conditions depend on the interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, oceans and solid Earth including phenomena such as El Nino, La Nina, the circulations of the atmosphere and oceans, the drifting of the continents and the ice ages. The course will include a focus on human‐environment relationships, both in the distance past and present, to investigate the impact future global warming and climate change may have.
