The African Centre for Climate and Earth System science (ACCESS) will be hosting a workshop on the 8-17 July 2009 at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. The workshop will focus on the evolution of planet Earth’s glorious diversity of flora and fauna and the conditions required to maintain these
favourable environments. The workshop will also explore the interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, oceans and solid Earth including phenomena such as El Niño, La Niña, the circulations of the atmosphere and oceans, the drifting of the continents and the ice ages.
These along, with global warming, will be the topics covered in the workshop that introduces 3rd and 4th year university students (from fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, zoology, botany, oceanography and engineering) to Earth system sciences. Mornings will be devoted to lectures, afternoons to computer exercises and to geologic and oceanographic field trips. The workshop also serves to recruit students for a master’s level degree course held at the University of Cape Town.

If you wish to apply please send us an APPLICATION LETTER/MOTIVATIONAL LETTER stating why you should be considered to attend the workshop, as well as a ONE PAGE CV which must include the name, email address and other contact details of either a course coordinator or a supervisor at your university/institution. Please note if you have already applied through the ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), please do not re-apply – the ICTP applications are currently being assessed.

DEADLINE – 4 May 2009
Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be considered
