SANCOR ACTIVITIES CONTINUED:

The four Task Teams appointed to address elements of the Strategic Plan completed their work and submitted final reports. The excellent quality of work and willing contribution of time from the members of these Task Teams is acknowledged. The efforts of the Corrective Action Task Team included a questionnaire of students, and have resulted in a submission of recommendations to the NRF, while the Stakeholder Task Team was instrumental in identifying potential stakeholders and assisting with defining the levels of participation in SANCOR. The membership Task Team on the other hand defined four different categories of SANCOR membership viz, investor, sponsor, institutional and individual members. An exciting and vibrant product of the Promotions and Education Task Team is the establishment of a Marine and Coastal Educators Network that will ensure ongoing active attention to this crucial area of marine science, engineering and technology (MSET).

The SANCOR Co-ordinating Groups were also very active, with the addition of the Marine and Coastal Educators Network, and discussions aimed at CERM becoming a new Co-ordinating Group are near finalization. SANCOR members contributed significantly to linefish management and research issues, through the 3rd Marine Line fish Symposium in Arniston in April 1999 as well as at a national workshop called by Marine and Coastal Management in September 1999.

There has been a focus on involving students more fully in SANCOR activities and in MSET in general. SANCOR provided support for students to attend a number of conferences, including ICES and SAMSS 2000. In addition, a student representative has been included in the SSC for the first time, and a new SANCOR Prestigious Student Travel Award was awarded this year.

I would like to thank the dedicated members of the SANCOR community for once again rising to the occasion in developing the new research programme, contributing to policy formulation in the coastal zone, and assisting to resolve important management issues such as subsistence fisheries, linefish and estuarine matters.

Lastly, a big thank you to Renee le Roux for the tremendous contribution in time and effort that she has made over the past year to the SANCOR community, and for the energetic and professional support she has provided as the Secretariat of the SSC over the past busy year. We are also extremely fortunate to have the efficient support of Annette Schnetler, whom I thank for her willing assistance and advice.
